Shelley surely knew he was a great poet, and he was also pretty good at promoting himself and raising his own fame, becoming a great celebrity of his time, but I'm not sure he would have predicted the specific (massive) legacy of this poem in particular, or that he would have wrote it specifically with the intention to create the type of irony you are attributing to it. So Ozymandias likely already wasn't forgotten prior to Shelley, thanks to an educated class of people who had a broad base of exposure to Hellenic texts. I'm not an expert on the reception of classical history and culture, but it would seem Shelley was already familiar with the name and legend of Ozymandias from the Greeks, since he is using their name for the Egyptian Pharaoh, presumably from a Greek historian. Is my assumption for this poem to be an irony, is correct? Or that was the main satirical point of the poem? So in the end, Ozymandias actually remembered through his arrogance and with the help of PB Shelley and has withstood the passage of time. PB Shelley's assumption of Ozymandias being forgotten is quite ironic, as King Ozymandias isn't being remembered the way he wanted to be but he is still in the mind of every humanities student, teenager or a literary scholar. If we go beyond the reality of this poem, most people have read, heard or have a faint idea on what Ozymandias is, as it is published in every major literary and school textbooks. But time shows its true nature and Ozymandias is long forgotten and his statue is in ruins.īut the irony is that Ozymandias is not forgotten. Ozymandias is a arrogant king who considers himself the "king of kings" and he made a statue to show his might.
